[EXW Demo — Coach Alan] Why External Edge Simulators? (Bypassing Canvas HTML Sanitizers)
WPE Department Faculty & Administrator Demo Artifact (Curriculum-as-Code): This item is maintained by Coach Alan Pruitt for internal faculty and Canvas Administrator demonstrations only (non-student-facing). Why External Edge Simulators? (Bypassing Canvas HTML Sanitizers) / ¿Por Qué Simuladores Externos en el Borde?
In Plain English: Reading Navigation Guide
Before you read the details below, here is the short version: An Edge Simulator is an interactive clinical calculator hosted outside Canvas that embeds safely inside a course page. Canvas strips interactive code for security, so our tools run on exwtoolkit.com and appear inside an iframe window. This gives students hands-on clinical lab practice at zero textbook cost on any phone or laptop.
Welcome to the EXW Department Virtual Lab Sandbox. This environment demonstrates how to bypass common Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) limitations without licensing expensive vendor courseware or compromising student accessibility.
The Canvas Sanitizer Challenge / El Reto del Filtro de Seguridad de Canvas
When faculty attempt to build interactive tools directly in the Canvas Rich Content Editor (RCE), the built-in sanitizer immediately strips:
- JavaScript:
<script>tags and inline Document Object Model (DOM) event listeners (e.g.,oninput,onclick). - Dynamic Forms: Interactive calculations, variable states, and sliders.
- Dynamic Cascading Style Sheets (CSS): Advanced layout controls and visual interactive feedback loops.
The Edge Sandbox Architecture / La Arquitectura de Simuladores OER
Instead of battling Canvas's sanitizer, we decouple the simulation runtime from LMS delivery using an Open Educational Resource (OER) Edge Sandbox Model:
- Edge Host (exwtoolkit.comLinks to an external site. / GitHub Pages): Pure client-side HTML5/CSS/JS micro-tools running directly in the student's browser with zero logins, zero cost, and no data tracking.
- Sanitizer-Safe Embed (
<iframe>): Clean, standard, responsive containers embedded into Canvas assignment or discussion pages. - Active Verification Clipboard Export: Students test physiological parameters using the Clinical Framing Protocol (Pattern / Rule / Solve — Patrón / Regla / Solución), clear compliance checks, and click Export Verification Audit to paste their evidence receipt directly into the Canvas submission box.
Open Educational Resource (OER) Standard:
Zero paywalls, zero vendor licensing fees, and fully compliant with Section 508 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA accessibility standards (enforcing our 9:1 Double-Contrast Guard).
